Dem Rep: Pelosi Tearing Up Trump’s Speech Was 'Dignified'

February 5, 2020

Rep. Sean Maloney (D., N.Y.) on Wednesday said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) behaved in a dignified manner when she tore pages of President Donald Trump’s speech during the State of the Union.

"I think the speaker has consistently found a dignified way to make clear she is not going to normalize the president's behavior," Maloney said on MSNBC.

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle asked Maloney if he believed Pelosi should have torn the speech.

Maloney said he was proud of Pelosi’s conduct and that her response signaled to viewers that what the president said was false.

"She's walking that line like all of us of respecting the office and trying to make sure people understand the president should be, in most all cases, respected, and that event is a dignified event and she conducted herself that way," Maloney said. "But she also has an obligation, we all do, we just spoke about it, to find a way to make clear that what the president's saying is fake, it's false, it's rooted in a lie, and I think she found a way to do that and I'm proud of her."

During his speech, Trump touted the economy, choreographed a reunion between a U.S. servicemember returning from Afghanistan and his family, and honored a Tuskegee airman.
