Daniel Cameron, a black Republican candidate for attorney general of Kentucky, pushed back Sunday against a political cartoon showing him holding onto a Ku Klux Klan robe being worn by President Donald Trump.
The cartoon, which was published in the Lexington Herald-Leader, portrays Trump as a member of the KKK and shows him walking away from a burning cross. Cameron—depicted with light skin—is shown happily clutching on the tail end of his robe.
"This is what the @HeraldLeader —a 'tolerant,' left-leaning newspaper—thinks about black folks who dare to be Republican. You're a racist following the KKK unless you hate @realDonaldTrump," Cameron tweeted. "Let’s make history on November 5th and show we don't take orders from the elites anymore."

The Herald-Leader's editorial board endorsed Cameron's Democratic opponent, Gregory Stumbo, for attorney general, saying he has the "proven experience that Kentucky urgently needs to tackle its greatest challenges." The board also referenced his experience as Kentucky's attorney general from 2004 to 2008.
Trump tweeted his endorsement of Cameron in July for being tough on crime and supporting the Second Amendment.

Cameron, a former legal counsel for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), reacted positively to the endorsement, saying he looked forward to working with Trump to "combat the drug crisis and crackdown [sic] on illegal immigration."
This isn't the first time Cameron has received criticism for Trump's endorsement of him. In August, Kentucky radio host Dawn Elliott said Cameron should "stop eating the 'Coon Flakes'" and claimed he was "slapping all the black ancestors in the face" for supporting Trump.
