Buttigieg Attacks Warren, Sanders in Campaign Ad

October 15, 2019

South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg released a campaign ad attacking Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) for their health care proposals.

The ad, titled "Makes More Sense," features clips of various media commentators speaking positively about Buttigieg's "Medicare for all who want it" plan, which the candidate claims will make single payer health insurance available without banning private health insurance companies. The proposals offered by Warren and Sanders would abolish private insurance coverage and force every American into government-run health care.

"Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren believe that we have to force ourselves into Medicare for All, where private insurance is abolished," CNN political commentator Joe Lockhart says in a clip about halfway through the ad, which was released Monday.

Buttigieg has used health care to differentiate himself from Warren and Sanders previously, as he attempts to present himself as a moderate alternative in the Democratic primary.

Buttigieg accused Warren in September of being "extremely evasive" about how she would pay for Medicare for All, saying that she should be "straightforward" about the fact that the plan requires a tax hike on the middle class. While Sanders has admitted his proposal would require tax hikes, Warren has repeatedly dodged the question.
