Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D., Mich.) struggled to answer a question on how Democrats could run against the economy in 2020 during a Thursday appearance on CNN.
"We still have challenges. I am grateful, I have a stock portfolio. I'll tell you my stock portfolio is doing well," Lawrence told CNN's Jim Sciutto. "But when I look at the people that I represent and people all over this country, be clear, everyone, in this country, it must be included in this economic resurgence and that's not a reality and that's where Trump is not hitting a home run."
Lawrence also said that Michigan was seeing some manufacturing plants close but also seeing some open and that people were moving into Detroit but not hiring people from Detroit.
According to a recent poll, 62 percent of Michigan voters said the economy is on the right track. A Fox News national poll showed that 52 percent of voters approved of President Donald Trump's handling of the economy and 51 percent thought the economy was in good or excellent condition.
Lawrence endorsed Senator Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) after the Democratic presidential debate on Wednesday. Harris has used a similar line of argument on the economy.
"You know, this president walks around talking about and flouting his great economy, right, my great economy, my great economy. You ask him, well, how are you measuring this greatness of this economy of yours? And he talks about the stock market. Well, that’s fine if you own stocks. So many families in America do not," Harris said in June. "You ask him, how are you measuring the greatness of this economy of yours? And they point to the jobless numbers and the unemployment numbers. Well, yeah, people in America are working. They're working two and three jobs."
