Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) on Monday night jokingly instructed the town hall audience to cheer for her after she talked about some of her electoral accomplishments in Minnesota.
Klobuchar participated in a CNN town hall in Manchester, N.H. where she was asked by a college student how she was going to appeal to a discontented middle class and regain their trust like then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 election.
"I am someone that runs in a purple state. It is a state that when I first started running for office the other sentaor was Republican, the governor was Republican, and three of our four Constitutional officers were Republican," Klobuchbar said. "And then I started running and every single time I have run, I have won every single Congressional district in my state, including Michelle Bachmann's, okay?"
"It's when you guys are supposed to cheer," Klobuchar joked, prompting the audience to clap.
Klobuchar said she never sold out on her principles and noted how she participated in political settings that were "comfortable" and "uncomfortable."
Klobuchar's quip to the audience is similar to what former Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said during the primary in 2016. In February 2016, Bush was contrasting himself to what he considered more divisive candidates during a town hall in Hanover, N.H., but he was met with silence from the audience., according to BuzzFeed.
"I will not trash talk. I will not be a divider-in-chief or an agitator-in-chief," he said. "I won't be out there blowharding, talking a big game without backing it up. I think the next president needs to be a lot quieter, but send a signal that we're prepared to act in the national security interests of this country — to get back in the business of creating a more peaceful world," Bush said
