Ohio Woman on Whether She Would Vote for a Democrat: 'Never, Never, Never'

February 28, 2019

An Ohio woman made it clear she would never vote for a Democrat over President Donald Trump during an interview with MSNBC reporter Vaughn Hillyard aired on Thursday.

"He made some big allegations against the president," Hillyard said, referencing Michael Cohen's testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday. "Did you vote for President Trump?

"Yes," Joyce Hargenrather said.

"Does this erode your confidence in him?" Hillyard asked.

"No, not at all," Hargenrather responded.

"What would it take for you to vote for a Democrat over President Trump in 2020?" Hillyard asked.

"Oh my goodness. Never, never, never a Democrat," Hargenrather said.

Hillyard spoke to other voters in Dayton, Ohio, about the Cohen hearing.

"Has this eroded your trust in President Trump?" Hillyard asked Tom Payne.

"No," Payne responded, noting that he is a registered Democrat but voted for Trump in 2016.

Payne said he plans to vote for Trump again in 2020.

Another man, Tom Gray, said he "wasn't expecting much" from the hearing and called it "a waste of time."

Trump won Ohio by more than an 8 percent margin in 2016, and he carried Montgomery County, which contains Dayton, by just under 1 percent. The president's approval rating in Ohio was split in 2018, with 48 percent expressing approval and 48 percent expressing disapproval, according to Gallup. Political scientist Larry Sabato rates Ohio as a state leaning Republican in 2020.

During his hearing yesterday, Cohen, who served as Trump's personal attorney, alleged the president sought to cover up payments to silence porn star Stormy Daniels about an affair. He also claimed Trump knew WikiLeaks was going to leak Democratic National Committee emails damaging to Hillary Clinton.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in December for a variety of charges, including tax evasion, bank fraud, campaign finance violations, and lying to Congress. He has also been disbarred.
