Kaine: Leaders Don't Say Different Things to Different Audiences

September 1, 2016

Hillary Clinton's running mate Sen. Tim Kaine (D., VA.) said that it's important that politicians are consistent in their messaging to audiences during an interview Thursday on Today.

Kaine talked with NBC's Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie about Donald Trump's Wednesday visit with the Mexican president. They discussed the optics of the situation when Kaine became critical of politicians changing their messaging to fit an audience.

"Donald Trump stood there with the Mexican president, he was toned down. No outrageous rhetoric. He seemed to be on his best ... presidential behavior," Lauer said. "Is that one of the difficult things for you, running against a Donald Trump that you never know exactly which Donald Trump you're going to get?"

"You know, I think the important thing about leadership is you've got to be consistent. You can't say different things to different audiences," Kaine said.

Kaine's running mate has been criticized throughout her political career for pandering to her audiences.

In July of 2015, Clinton told an audience in Hew Hampshire that she has a record in standing up and fighting for "progressive" values. A few months later Clinton struck a different tone with an audience of women in Ohio, telling them she was a moderate.

Clinton has also shifted positions on numerous issues over her career and the campaign, altering views on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Iraq War, same-sex marriage and illegal immigration, among others.
