Continetti: ‘Break Out the Popcorn’ for Liberal Infighting

November 11, 2020

Washington Free Beacon founding editor Matthew Continetti said Wednesday that Joe Biden will likely face pressure from the left as he struggles to get things done in a divided government.

"There is every likelihood that in January, a President Biden will be facing pressure from a frustrated left with the diminished House majority and Mitch McConnell in control of the Senate," Continetti said during an appearance on Fox News's Special Report. "And if you're a conservative, break out the popcorn."

With Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D., Calif.) influence set to dwindle in the House, and the Senate likely to remain under the leadership of McConnell, Biden is set to face an uncooperative Congress. But left-wing organizations have already begun pressuring the former vice president to govern as a progressive. The Justice Democrats and the Sunrise Movement on Wednesday unveiled a list of their preferred choices for Biden’s cabinet—among them are Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.).

For Democrats to wrest control of the majority from McConnell, they would need to win both Georgia runoff elections in January. Continetti said they might not even want Biden leading the charge to take those seats, with some behind the scenes preferring former president Barack Obama in that role.

"The scuttlebutt is that Democrats would rather Biden stay away and Obama go," he said.
