Obama Uses Photo of Himself for Christmas Card That Doesn't Say Christmas

President Barack Obama used a photo of himself and his family for his final Christmas card in the White House, a rare break from tradition.

Obama has never mentioned the word "Christmas" on his Christmas cards, and this year he featured a picture of himself and family, only the fourth president to do so in American history.

"He is just the fourth known president to ever feature a photo of himself on the White House Christmas card since the tradition began in 1927," the New York Post reported. "Herbert Hoover was the first in 1932, followed by Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, in the 1940s and then Bill and Hillary Clinton in 1993."

"As our family reflects on our many happy years spent in the White House, we are grateful for the friends we’ve made, the joy we've shared, and the gifts of kindness we've received. We wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a wonderful new year."

Obama has never featured an image of a Christmas tree on his Christmas cards either. However, almost all of his cards have featured his Portuguese Water Dogs Sunny and Bo.

Obama has a habit of honoring other people with photos of himself, most recently when the legendary golfer Arnold Palmer passed away and the president shared a photo of himself putting in the oval office.

Last year Business Insider published a collection of White House Christmas cards. Only Democrats, with the exception of Herbert Hoover, have ever used a photograph of themselves on their Christmas cards.

Most presidents use a photograph of the White House, or paintings of historic rooms in the West Wing. George W. Bush always featured a Bible verse on his cards for the holiday that marks the birth of Jesus Christ.

Franklin D. Roosevelt used a photo of himself and wife Eleanor many times. The last president to use his likeness was in 1993, when Bill Clinton posed with his wife and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

The first president to use "Season's Greetings" was Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. Obama used the phrase for his first Christmas card in 2009.

Time reported that people were "getting emotional" when Obama's final Christmas card was released, reporting on four tweets from Obama fans who shared crying emojis and said they "can't deal."
