Barber On Congress's Agenda Before Midterms

September 9, 2014

Ellison Barber appeared on Fox News Tuesday to review with Jon Scott that other than passing a continuing resolution to keep the government open, Congress won't try to rock the boat before the November election.

ELLISON BARBER: Everyone I talk to on the House and Senate, the only thing they agree will likely get done is continuing resolution to fund the government. Both Republicans and Democrats realize they need to. To not do it and have another shutdown would be bad for everyone. That is likely to get done. Another thing: You may see something happen on the Export-Import bank. If we see something happen with that, it will likely be a short-term extension; they push it off to deal with it early next year.

On the whole, look at the schedule for the House and Senate. What you see is an election agenda much more than legislative one. They will be passing a lot of bills and looking at bills on both sides that benefit their candidates and get out further the message for their party and campaign there. They're hoping to push back in all their different campaigns.

Barber also said Congress will be listening to President Obama's strategy in regards to ISIL and will hold on authorizing air strikes in response to the threat of the Islamic State.
