Self-Employed Handyman Becomes Latest Obamacare Victim

'It's mind numbing'

November 25, 2013

Self employed handyman Tom Harris has become the latest victim of Obamacare, Casey Wian of CNN reports.

Harris, like an estimated 5 million other individual policyholders, has received a cancellation notice from his insurance company. However, the new Obamacare compliant policy offered by his insurer does not cover almost any of the specialists Harris relies on to treat his debilitating allergies.

Given the state of California has rejected President Obama's proposed administrative fix, Harris said he finds himself in a "real struggle":

CASEY WIAN: [Harris's doctor] says 10 percent of his patients now must either find new doctors or pay steep out of pocket costs.

HARRIS: It's mind-numbing. It's mind-numbing.

WIAN: Even for Dr. Eitchis, less than six weeks before Obamacare takes effect, he still doesn't know which if any insurance plans he will accept. He's already stopped taking medicare.

ALLERGY DOCTOR: Honestly, what I may think about not taking any insurance at all. I have a lot of patients who have been seeing me for over 20 years and we have a bond. It would be sad to lose those patients.

WIAN: For Harris, Obamacare has meant fewer choices and headaches, untreatable by presidential apologies.

HARRIS: It's just so beyond that. I certainly wish him well but the situation I find myself in, the dynamic I find myself in is a real struggle.
