Weinstein: Clinton Would Draw Bigger Crowds Than Sanders if She Had Katy Perry With Her

April 19, 2016

Movie mogul and Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein dismissed Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I., Vt.) impressive crowd sizes Tuesday by saying Clinton would do better in that regard if pop star Katy Perry appeared alongside her.

Appearing on the afternoon edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, Weinstein touted Clinton's New York Daily News and New York Times endorsements while shrugging off Lawrence O'Donnell's observation that Sanders out-polls Clinton in match-ups with Republicans.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski then brought up Sanders' Sunday record crowd in Brooklyn, where more than 28,000 people showed up for his event.

"But he had like 28,000 people at a rally," co-host Mika Brzezinski said. "Where did those people come from? Another state?"

Weinstein, who once worked under the late Meet The Press host Tim Russert, responded with an anecdote about how former Buffalo mayor Frank Sedita got huge crowds by throwing a "bomb" in the middle of the street.

"I'm sure there's some equivalent," he said.

"I don't know, I think they were showing up for Bernie," Brzezinski said.

"If I had Katy Perry, who supports Hillary, and I did a rally in Brooklyn, I'll get 39,000," Weinstein said.

"What about Hillary without Katy Perry?" Brzezinski asked.

"Well, I don't know who Bernie had at his rally, but I don't think he travels alone," Weinstein said.

"Just Bernie, right?" Brzezinski asked.

"Just Bernie? I don't think so," Weinstein said.

Host Joe Scarborough volunteered that Sanders had some bands there, but Brzezinski remained skeptical of Weinstein's claims, saying Sanders draws crowds on his own.

Clinton leads in the New York primary polls heading into Tuesday's vote. She is trying to break Sanders' winning streak and avoid a potentially embarrassing loss in the state she represented in the U.S. Senate for eight years. Sanders has strong New York ties too, having been born and raised in Brooklyn.
