Donald Trump said Wednesday that he and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto did not discuss who would pay for the southern border wall Trump has pledged to build to stem the tide of illegal immigration into the United States.

After both men made statements following their face-to-face meeting, they took some questions from the assembled press.

"We did discuss the wall. We didn’t discuss payment of the wall," Trump said. "That’ll be for a later date. This was a very preliminary meeting. I think it was an excellent meeting."

ABC reporter Jonathan Karl appeared to ask about payment for the wall as well.

"We didn’t discuss that," Trump said. "We didn’t discuss—who pays for the wall? We didn’t discuss."

One of Trump’s trademark campaign pledges has been to build a wall and get Mexico to pay for it. He has even led crowds at his campaign rallies in chanting that Mexico will be the one who pays for it.
