President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States will condemn the Russian government if it is deemed responsible for the nerve agent attack on an ex-spy in the United Kingdom.
Trump, addressing reporters following his firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, also answered a few questions from reporters, including one on the nerve agent attack that took place earlier in March. Sergei Skripal, a former Russian Army officer who spied for the U.K., and his daughter Yulia remain in critical condition after they were found unconscious in Salisbury, a city in Southwest England.
U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday said it was "highly likely" that Russia was to blame for the poisoning.
Trump said he planned to speak to May today and would then have more to say on the attack.
"I'm speaking to Theresa May today. It sounds to me like it would be Russia based on all the evidence they have. I don't know if they've come to a conclusion, but she's calling me today," Trump said.
Trump, noting he was flying out to see prototypes for the border wall along the Mexican border, reassured, "Theresa May is going to be speaking to me today. It sounds to me like they believe it was Russia and I would certainly take that finding as fact."
"As soon as we get the facts straight, if we agree with them, we will condemn Russia or whoever it may be," Trump added in response to continued questions.
