Trump and Acosta Have Testy Exchange at Memorandum Signing: 'You're Fake News'

President Donald Trump and CNN reporter Jim Acosta had a tense exchange Monday afternoon regarding Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, with both accusing each other of being "fake news."

Trump spoke earlier Monday and condemned white supremacist groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis by name; on Saturday, in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, he took sharp criticism for his initial statement condemning violence "on many sides."

After Trump signed a memorandum addressing China's intellectual property laws Monday, Acosta called out to ask why Trump did not condemn the groups by name over the weekend.

"They've been condemned. They have been condemned," Trump said.

Acosta then asked why the White House wasn't holding a press conference on Monday, as had been originally promised.

"We had a press conference. We just had a press conference," Trump said.

"Can we ask you some more questions then, sir?" Acosta asked.

"It doesn't bother me at all, but, you know, I like real news. Not fake news. You're fake news," Trump said, pointing at Acosta.

Trump walked out of the room, but Acosta called out, "Haven't you spread a lot of fake news yourself, sir?"

Acosta has sparred with Trump and other members of the administration throughout the Trump presidency; Trump once told Acosta he was "very fake news." Acosta's biography for his Twitter account states that he believes in "#realnews."

Acosta also had multiple spats with former press secretary Sean Spicer about the absence of cameras at the White House press briefing.
