Top Progressive Groups Drop Endorsements of Grayson Amid Abuse Allegations

Multiple liberal backers have withdrawn their endorsements of Rep. Alan Grayson’s (D.) Florida Senate campaign following a Politico report that disclosed numerous domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America both severed relations with Grayson on Tuesday. Both groups called on the Florida Democrat to donate their members’ campaign donations to an Orlando domestic violence charity.

"Unfortunately, this deeply disappointing revelation means progressives have no great options in the Florida race for Senate," the two groups said in a statement.

Grayson denied his ex-wife’s accusations of battery, which were detailed in four separate police reports.

Revolution Messaging, a top digital consulting firm that backed Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid, cast off Grayson as a client in the wake of the abuse reports. The progressive firm is prohibiting his campaign from using any of its email technology, which could deliver a key setback to his Senate bid, Politico reported.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid previously urged Grayson to drop out of his primary race against Rep. Patrick Murphy, who has the backing of President Obama and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

"Sen. Reid didn’t think his opinion of Grayson could get any lower, but it has," a Reid spokeswoman told Politico.

Other Democratic leaders have said they may join Reid following the revelations.

The Communications Workers of America said it would assess the allegations before deciding whether to withdraw its endorsement of Grayson.

"We are just learning about this and are looking into the allegations," a CWA spokesman said. "We’ll decide next steps over the next couple of days."
