Terry McAuliffe Receives Donation from President of Obama Phone Provider

October 16, 2013

Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe received a large campaign donation from one of the main profiteers of a government program that gives away "Obama phones."

According to recent campaign filings, McAuliffe received $25,000 from Frederick Pollak, president and CEO of TracFone Wireless.

TracFone was one of the major providers for the government subsidized Lifeline program that gives away what have come to be known as "Obama phones," after a video of a Barack Obama supporter claiming to have received a free phone from Obama went viral.

TracFone receives up to a quarter of the programs funding, amassing $451.7 million in support payments from the government in 2011 alone.

TracFone had 3.8 million subscribers subscribed to the program as of late 2011.

Pollak also donated $50,000 to the Obama campaign. His wife raised more than $1.5 million for the president’s two campaigns

Both Pollaks were also bundlers for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.

McAuliffe has already received tremendous support from the Clinton family. Former President Bill Clinton has headlining fundraisers for his close friend McAuliffe numerous times, in addition to making a $100,000 donation. Hillary will be spending this coming weekend campaigning with McAuliffe and will be headlining a Beverly Hills fundraiser for him at the end of October.
