Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D., N.H.) said Thursday she has "serious questions" for secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel on abortion policy and Israel.
"I do have some serious questions for (Hagel) about how he would implement the amendment that I just put into the Defense Authorization bill," Shaheen said in an interview with Andrea Mitchell.
Shaheen's amendment expands the access of female service members to abortion in the cases of rape and incest.
As a Nebraska Senate candidate, Hagel opposed abortion in the case of rape, saying that such pregnancies were "rare." MSNBC's Rachel Maddow criticized sharply those views on her Tuesday broadcast, calling them "Akin-esque."
"I want to hear what he has to say about Israel, and some of the statements that have been made on his past positions on Israel," Shaheen went on to say in the interview. "Now, I think he's had a very strong record in support of Israel, but, I think, those are questions I want to hear him answer."
