'Sex and the City' Actress Announces New York Primary Challenge to Cuomo

"Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon has announced plans to challenge Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the 2018 election.

A longtime liberal activist and ally to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Nixon has recently hinted at a primary run to Cuomo's left. The New York Times reported earlier in the month that she was hiring political consultants ahead of a challenge to the beleaguered Cuomo.

On Monday, she made it official. "I love New York, and today I'm announcing my candidacy for governor," Nixon tweeted, along with a video touting her views on healthcare, fixing New York City's subway, and ending mass incarceration.

"Cynthia hasn't been bought and paid for by special interests and won't be accepting any corporate contributions in this campaign," the linked donation website reads. "Instead our campaign will be powered by the people."

Ahead of the presumed announcement, Cuomo has touted the endorsement of powerful Democratic leaders, which includes having held a fundraiser with former presidential candidate Al Gore.

A poll from the Democrat & Chronicle finds Nixon faces an uphill battle, with 66 percent of registered Democrats supporting Cuomo to her 19 percent.
