Schumer: Shut Down Priorities USA & CAP Action

January 28, 2014

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said Priorities USA and CAP Action Fund should be "shut down" Tuesday on The O'Reilly Factor.

O'Reilly criticized the New York senator throughout the interview for a speech he gave at the Center for American Progress where Schumer suggested the IRS should further scrutinize Tea Party 501 C4 organizations. CAP is affiliated with their own 501(c)4, Center for American Progress Action Fund.

Schumer countered he believes all so called "dark money" groups should be eliminated despite singling out Tea Party groups at the CAP event. O'Reilly replied he broadly agreed campaign finance reforms are needed, but questioned why Schumer seemed reluctant to point out abuse by liberal groups such as the $57 million Priorities USA spent defaming Mitt Romney in 2012.

In uncharacteristically stark terms, Schumer said if Priorities USA "did it under the 501(c)4, they should be shut down. I'll say it right here, liberal group. Pro Democratic group. Shut them down":

BILL O'REILLY: […] Do you know how much Priorities USA spent defaming Mitt Romney in the last election? Do you know how much?

CHUCK SCHUMER: Hey, I don't know the number but it was too much.

O'REILLY: $57 million dollars. $57 million.

SCHUMER: If they did it under the 501(c)4 they ought to be shut down. I'll say it right here, liberal group, pro-Democratic group, shut them down.

OREILLY: You and I agree on this issue but I want you to be fair and balanced when you specifically name a group. That's all I'm asking.

SCHUMER: That's why I'm here on Fox News to be fair and balanced.
