Schumer Refuses to Say Which Democrat He Thinks Could Beat Trump in 2020

April 28, 2017

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) dodged MSNBC reporter Kasie Hunt's question Friday about which Democrats he believes can beat President Trump in a hypothetical 2020 matchup.

"I would like one very short answer to this question. Who in the Democratic Party can beat President Trump in 2020?" Hunt asked.

"Lots of people," Schumer said.

"Lots of people. One name?" Hunt asked.

"I'm not going to pick a name, but if he continues at the rate—" Schumer said, before Hunt cut him off.

Hunt then asked Schumer to name the leader of the Democratic Party and asked whether it was him.

"We have a bunch of leaders, you know, I certainly am the leader of the Senate and I try to help represent the Democratic Party. But we have a lot of very good voices. It's much too premature to handicap 2020," Schumer said.

Schumer went on to throw out a prediction that Democrats have a chance to take back the Senate in 2018 if Trump's presidency goes the same way as his first 100 days.

Schumer is not the first Democrat to not know who the de facto leader of the party is now that Barack Obama is no longer president. Many Democrats have been asked in recent months to address this question, but their answers have varied, naming several different politicians, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
