Sanders to Clinton: 'You're Not in the White House Yet'

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I.,Vt.) reminded Hillary Clinton at Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate that she was not back in the White House just yet.

"Secretary Clinton, you are not in the White House yet," Sanders said. "And let us be clear that every proposal that I have introduced has been paid for."

The candidates were asked by PBS Newshour moderators about the cost of their plans to expand the government, which came to a head when Clinton attacked Sanders’ higher education spending plan and presented hers as a reasonable alternative.

Sanders claimed that he would do away with loopholes that allow the wealthiest Americans to not pay taxes on bank accounts in the Cayman Islands or Bermuda. Sanders also suggested a tax on Wall Street investing that would be used to pay for tuition-free public colleges and universities.

"Yeah I do believe that now after the American people bailed Wall Street out that yes, they should pay a Wall Street speculation tax so that we can make public colleges and university tuition free. We bailed them out, now it is their time to help the middle class," Sanders said.

Clinton responded by talking about her college compact, which she claims would make college debt-free. Clinton took a swing at Sanders’ plan, saying that Republican governors like Scott Walker of Wisconsin would never contribute money to make the plan viable.

"Senator Sanders’ plan really rests on making sure governors like Scott Walker contribute $23 billion on the first day to make college free. I'm a little skeptical about your governor actually caring enough about higher education to make any kind of commitment like that," Clinton said.
