Rep. Gowdy: Dems Calling for Public Hearings on Flynn Are Politically Motivated

February 15, 2017

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R., S.C.) said on Wednesday that Democrats who are calling for public hearings to investigate President Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn are politically motivated, rather than interested in learning what happened before he resigned on Monday night.

Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer asked Gowdy to weigh in on a Wednesday morning statement from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R., Ky.) regarding Russia's interference in U.S. electoral system last year.

"We know they were messing around with it. We don't think they have any impact on the outcome but, obviously, we are not going to ignore something like that," McConnell said in a "Morning Joe" interview.

Gowdy said the more evidence and information Congress have, the better it will be for the investigation. But he holds that some of his Democratic colleagues are trying to politicize the investigation.

"One of my Democratic colleagues said he wants public hearings, public hearings on classified information," Gowdy said. "Whenever someone says they want public hearings about a classified matter, you just know they're not serious."

"So Congress is capable of investigating. In fact, we did it in the committee I was on. 99 out of our 100 interviews were done in private," he continued.

"The Democrats want this to be a public story. They're much more interested in the politics of it than they are actually finding out what happened," Gowdy added.

The Democratic colleague Gowdy was referencing is Rep. Elijah Cummings (D., Md.), the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
