President Obama to Skip Funeral for Justice Scalia

White House spokesman Josh Earnest confirmed Wednesday that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the private funeral for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“The president and the first lady on Friday will travel to the Supreme Court to pay their respects to Justice Scalia as he lies in repose there are the Supreme Court,” Earnest said. “I can tell you that Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will attend Justice Scalia’s funeral at the Basilica on Saturday.”

In 2005, Former President George W. Bush not only attended the funeral of Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist but also eulogized Rehnquist.

Earnest did not give any further explanation on why the Obama’s would be skipping the funeral on Saturday. He did say that it was an “important opportunity” for the president and the first lady to pay their respects to the late justice.

Earnest would not give any more details about the president’s weekend plans after one reporter suggested that it would be in bad taste for the president to be playing golf.
