Potential Clinton VP Would Be OK with Bernie Sanders as President

October 19, 2015

At the Texas Tribune Festival, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro said he would be OK with Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders as president.

When Castro was asked whether he would be comfortable with Sanders as the nominee for the Democratic party, Castro said he would be.

Evan Smith, founder and CEO of the Texas Tribune, asked Castro if he could support Sanders and whether he could be elected. Castro said he could. Smith then asked Castro if the country could embrace someone who identifies as a Democratic socialist.

"I believe that it would be more difficult for Bernie Sanders to get elected but remember that elections are always a comparison between two people," Castro said.

When Smith asked if Castro's endorsement was an audition for Clinton's vice president, he said that it was the right time for the endorsement.

"We had the first Democratic debate, voting will start in February, so if you’re not going to [endorse] now, then when will you? No one’s going to be paying attention later on," Castro said.

Last week Hillary Clinton was in San Antonio, Texas, where Castro was once mayor. Clinton had publically said that she would consider Castro as a her potential running mate. Castro made the endorsement for Clinton along side her during the swing through the red state to court Latino voters.

Clinton also said that she would consider Castro for any cabinet position because "that's how good he is."

Castro has remained quiet when asked about becoming a potential vice president nominee and uses the time to talk about his plans as HUD secretary.
