Pence Accepts Vice-Presidential Nomination at GOP Convention

July 20, 2016

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence accepted the Republican Party's vice-presidential nomination Wednesday night in an address that was equal parts in praise of running mate Donald Trump and blisteringly critical of Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

Pence quipped that Trump is a "man known for a large personality, a colorful style and lots of charisma, and I guess he was just looking for some balance on the ticket."

Pence praised Trump as tough, a winner and someone able to fight against the odds, while ripping Clinton for the sluggish economy she praises President Obama for.

"In the end, this election comes down to just two names on the ballot so let's resolve here and now that Hillary Clinton will never become President of the United States of America," he said. "Hillary Clinton championed Obamacare because years earlier she had all been invented it.

"The national debt has nearly doubled in these eight years and her answer is to keep borrowing and spending, and she thinks the path to a growing economy is more taxes, more regulation and more government. Now, they tell us this economy is the best that we can do. It's nowhere near the best that we can do. It's just the best that they can do."

Trump awkwardly air-kissed Pence afterward when he joined him on the stage.
