Cruz Surrogate on Trump: 'We're Not Going to Nominate Hillary Clinton With a Penis'

May 3, 2016

A surrogate for Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas), Steve Lonegan, spoke Tuesday about how the conservative base of the Republican Party is not ready to throw their work away by nominating "Hillary Clinton with a penis," a reference to frontrunner Donald Trump.

Lonegan explained that he believes Cruz will excel in Indiana, citing that he normally does better than is expected of him.

"He will do very well tonight," he said. "He will outperform expectations like he always does. I don't believe the conservative base of this party is ready to throw everything over to Donald Trump."

To stick the landing, he finished with, "in essence, we're not going to nominate Hillary Clinton with a penis."

A criticism of Trump is that he and Clinton are "two sides of the same coin" because of their insider status. It has also been argued that some of Trump's stances are much more liberal than conservative. David Gregory called Trump "barely a Republican."

CNN co-host Kate Bolduan and Trump advisor Barry Bennett looked both surprised and confused at this comment.

Bolduan reacted by saying, "Steve... "

Lonegan confirmed his comment.

"I said it."

Bolduan said again, "Steve..."

"Yes?" he replied.

She continued, "Barry? Steve?"

"Why does this always happen on my show?" Bolduan asked. "Why do you guys always throw around the crazy on my show?"

This started because Bolduan asked Lonegan about how many delegates he believes Cruz will gain in the upcoming primary.
