MSNBC: Clinton Added Event in Oakland Due to Worries About Tight California Race With Sanders

May 27, 2016

Hillary Clinton added a campaign event in Oakland Friday due to worries about her tight race with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in the California Democratic primary, according to MSNBC.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Clinton led just 46-to-44 percent among likely voters in California , making it a statistical tie. According to MSNBC's Kristen Welker, Clinton added an event with community leaders in Oakland, in part because she needs a win there for "the momentum."

"She in fact added an event here in Oakland today because the race is tight," Welker said. "She wants to win California. She wants to head into the convention on solid ground and to do that, she has to win here, not so much necessarily for the math but for the momentum. And it comes after this really tough week that she's had ... That really scathing IG report that found that she did break some rules by using a private email server."

The State Department's inspector general report out Wednesday slammed Clinton's email conduct, although Clinton continued to maintain what she did was allowed.

Clinton is trying to put away the Democratic nomination, but Sanders' surprisingly strong challenge has left her short of the magic number of delegates to clinch. Mathematically, she is nearly assured to do so in June, but she has been battered by Sanders and attacks by GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
