Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Buck McKeon (R., Calif.) sent Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel a letter asking him to pay both service members and defense contractors during the government shutdown, on Monday.

McKeon said that the recently passed Pay Our Military Act ensured payment for active military service members and most defense contractors during the shutdown. The legislation also gives Hagel broad power to allow payment for defense employees that were deemed ‘non-essential’ by the Obama administration.

McKeon also requested further information on Hagel’s payment plan for the National Guard and Reserves employees.

“I know you would agree with me that this is no time to use our national security or our national security workforce as a political pawn,” McKeon said.
