Man Killed Near President’s Chicago Home in Robbery

Two men have been charged for a murder robbery that took place two blocks from the Chicago home of President Obama, according to the Chicago Tribune:

Williams was killed about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 4900 block of South Drexel Boulevard, near his home on the border between Bronzeville and Kenwood, about two blocks west of President Barack Obama’s Kenwood home.

Williams, of the 4000 block of South Lake Park Avenue, was sitting in a car eating with his girlfriend when the two men, one of whom was armed, walked up and announced a robbery, police and his family said.

He tried to fight back but was not successful. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 3:10 a.m., a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

According to his mother, the victim, Stephin L. Williams, worked two jobs and was attending school to become a registered nurse.

Over the weekend, 28 people were shot in Chicago, leaving nine dead; on Thursday night, 13 people were shot in a 30-minute window. The city's murder rate is up 30 percent over last year, according to CBS Chicago.
