MacLean Breaks Down 'Remarkable' Election Night for Republicans

November 9, 2016

Washington Free Beacon managing editor Aaron MacLean appeared on Fox News Wednesday morning to discuss the implications of Tuesday's stunning election of Republican Donald Trump to the presidency.

MacLean discussed items like repealing Obamacare and tax cuts that Trump could get through with a Republican Congress at his disposal.

"He's a uniquely polarizing figure within the party, so there are a number of different ways this could go," he said. "I think probably the most likely is if Trump decides to govern along the relatively conservative policy lines that he's laid out in his campaign, he's going to get a lot of that stuff passed."

In addition to Trump's upset of Hillary Clinton, the Republicans retained control of the House and the Senate, giving them full control of the White House and Congress for the first time since the 2004 election. That was also the last time a Republican won the White House, when George W. Bush was re-elected.

Fox News host Abby Huntsman later asked MacLean if any of the Senate results surprised him. The GOP, playing defense in numerous states, had a hugely successful night, with incumbent Sens. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), Ron Johnson (R., Wis.), Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Rob Portman (R., Ohio) among those notching solid wins.

"To be frank, no individual race surprised me. I think the aggregate certainly surprises me," he said. "I am surprised at how well Republicans have done overall in a year where the math was so tough for them ... It's just a remarkable victory."

He added it appeared that Trump, long feared to have a negative effect on down-ballot races, had a positive effect on Republicans running for the Senate.
