Liberal Radio Host Says Death Benefits to Military Families Should Not Be Paid During Shutdown

Press asks why pay death benefits when the CDC flu prevention program is shuttered

BY:

Liberal radio host Bill Press said death benefits to military families should not be paid during the shutdown because it prejudices those "things that pop up in get a lot of media attention" over other "legitimate" functions of government Thursday on The Bill Press Show.

By "fixing" the problem, Press suggested, a quick end to the shutdown becomes less likely:

BILL PRESS: When you shut down the government, a lot of great things are not going to get done. And why should we make an exception for those that just happen to pop up and get a lot of media attention?

The idea that paying death benefits to military families may be a virtue beyond a function of government seemed lost on the liberal radio host.

Among the federal programs Press said were languishing unfunded beneath military death gratuities were occupational safety inspectors and the CDC's seasonal flu prevention program.
