Rep. Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) said on Monday that despite a short-lived government shutdown coming to an end, "the war" between Democrats and Republicans will continue.

Politico senior reporter Jake Sherman posted Hoyer’s comment on Twitter after the Senate voted to extend funding for the federal government through Feb. 8, avoiding a longer shutdown. In a now deleted tweet, Sherman quoted the congressman as saying Democrats "lost the skirmish, but not the war."

"HOYER in House Dem caucus meeting: ‘We lost the skirmish, but not the war,’" Sherman tweeted.

Sherman soon deleted the original tweet after receiving comment from Hoyer's officer.  "Hoyer world says that he said: 'We neither lost the battle, nor the war; the war will continue.' Not that Democrats lost this round of the fight," Sherman tweeted.

All but five Senate Democrats voted against the short-term government funding bill Friday, causing the federal government to shut down for the first time since October of 2013.

The majority of Democrats argued any continuing resolution (CR) should include a solution for the illegal immigrants previously protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Republicans have maintained  a DACA replacement should be legislated separately from the CR. They argue it should be done so comprehensively to address immigration reform broadly, to include border security.

A bipartisan group created a short-term spending solution Monday, which is expected to land on President Donald Trump’s desk to have the government reopen by Monday evening.
