Hillary Clinton on Female Attributes: We've Got To 'Keep Everybody Around the Dinner Table Being In a Good Mood'

November 19, 2015

Female presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who is not male and could be the first female president of the United States, suggested Thursday that one of the attributes a woman could bring to the White House is the ability to "keep everybody around the dinner table being in a good mood."

Clinton accused Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) of making sexist charges against her last month when he mentioned people were "shouting" in the gun control debate, so it is unclear whether Clinton's own campaign will take kindly to her relegating women to the kitchen with her metaphor.

Clinton made the remark during a lighthearted interview on ABC's Live With Kelly and Michael, after co-host Michael Strahan pointed out in the opening, if it wasn't clear already, that Clinton could be the first female U.S. president.

"I know how my households are run, and I feel like women have so many qualities that I think would be great," Strahan said. "What do you think would be some of the advantages of a female as our president?"

Clinton replied that women are "great multi-taskers," to cheers from the audience, in addition to mentioning she is a grandmother.

"Bringing my lifetime of experiences, what it's like to be a woman, what it's like to be a mother, now what it's like to be a grandmother, I think just gives you a different perspective which I think could be really helpful in bringing people together," she said. "We have a lot of divisiveness, but what do people care about? We care about our families. We care about our children. We care about our safety. We care about our future.

"Focusing on that and not so much on all the little things that divide us is part of what women have to do every day because in addition to being good multi-taskers, you've got to keep everybody around the dinner table being in a good mood. Now that we're getting toward Thanksgiving, you've got to keep everybody behaving."
