Heilemann: DNC Has Screwed up Debates 'From Start to Finish'

Bloomberg's John Heilemann called out the Democratic National Committee on Monday for having "screwed up" the debate schedule from the beginning of the election cycle.

The Democrats are holding a town hall forum, not an actual debate, Monday night on CNN in their last event before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1, subjecting the DNC to further criticism for limiting the number of debates.

"I want to take this opportunity to point out what a total mess this debate situation has been in the Democratic Party," Heilemann said on With All Due Respect. "It should be a debate, regular old debate. Last week before the Iowa caucuses, we should have a final Democratic debate here in Iowa. Instead, we're having this jerry-rigged candidate forum. It's better than nothing, but there's no good reason why we shouldn't be having this as a formal debate where they can be on stage together. I think the DNC has screwed this whole thing up from start to finish."

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been adamant about not adding any more debates to the schedule and has maintained that Monday night's forum is another opportunity for people to see the candidates in a different environment.

Wasserman Schultz has also been accused of protecting Hillary Clinton by having a limited number of debates, holding the debates on weekends or even when major sporting events are happening.

Earlier in the segment, co-host Mark Halperin pointed out that not many Iowans would be watching the forum because there is a huge college basketball game tonight between Iowa State and Kansas.
