Harrington: Pelosi Certainly Knows How to Design Winning Campaigns for Republicans

Washington Free Beacon staff writer Elizabeth Harrington said Thursday that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) is making a mistake by targeting Republicans over tax reform.

Harrington appeared on Fox Business Network to discuss the state of the economy and how it will affect the 2018 midterm elections. Host Charles Payne brought up Pelosi's insistence that Democrats focus their message on the "GOP tax scam," and Harrington said that would only play into Republicans' hands.

"Pelosi certainly knows how to come up with winning strategies to help from Republicans," Harrington said. "It went from 'crumbs,' now it's a 'scam.'"

"I think to most voters the scam is what they do with our money once it gets to Washington," she added.

Harrington said that Republicans' prospects for retaining the House and Senate are improving because of economic growth, adding that the GOP will need that to continue.

"You see closing of the gap not only because of tax cuts but you see positive signs in the economy," she said. "And I think you also see voters reacting positively to Trump's latest moves on trade. So I think Republicans are closing the gap, but it remains to be seen in November where the economy is going to be."

Harrington said the Democratic Party faces a choice between Pelosi's left wing of the party and the candidates like Conor Lamb who have aligned themselves closer to President Donald Trump.

She also said Republicans' passing a $1.3 trillion omnibus budget hurts their credibility regarding fiscal responsibility.

"Banking on tax cuts, which are good and are helping the economy, is one thing, but they are not going to have anything else on the agenda for the rest of the year, and that is what they did, spend $1.3 trillion?" she asked. "It makes them look completely hypocritical after years of protesting President Obama's trillion-dollar deficits. It's a bad look, and they didn't even get any funding for Trump's wall or any immigration reform either."
