Gun Industry Group Goes After Clinton in Latest Ad

September 1, 2016

A leading gun industry group has released an ad attacking Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s position on gun control.

"Will Hillary Clinton render the fundamental human right to keep and bear arms for defense impossible to exercise?" the National Shooting Sports Foundation ad asks. "You be the judge."

The ad plays a number of comments Clinton has made on gun rights and various gun control proposals. It starts with Clinton’s insistence at the Democratic National Convention in July that she is not interested in repealing the Second Amendment or taking away peoples’ guns. The NSSF ad then accuses the Democratic nominee of trying to hide her "contempt for the Second Amendment," saying her claim is at odds with her agenda.

The ad then plays audio from a 2015 New York fundraiser, first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, that features Clinton attacking the Supreme Court.

"The Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment," Clinton said in the audio. "And I am going to make that case every chance I get."

The ad then highlights Clinton’s contention that the Second Amendment is subject to "reasonable regulations," as are other constitutional rights. It then questions her "true intentions" on the issue. The ad points to her 1993 support for a 25 percent tax on all handguns, as well as her support for repealing liability protections for gun manufacturers and her support, first reported by the Free Beacon, for considering an Australian-style gun confiscation program in the United States.

The ad is part of the group’s Gun Vote campaign, which seeks to turn out voters in favor of gun rights.
