Rob Ford, the infamous former mayor of Toronto, died at the age of 46 after a battle with cancer.
The Associated Press reported Ford’s death Tuesday, citing members of his family. Ford served as mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014, during which time he became widely known for his drinking issues, illegal drug use, and boisterous antics.
Ford became the subject of constant news reports and late night comedy routines after videos emerged of him appearing smoking crack cocaine and threatening to kill someone during his tenure. Despite scandal, Ford refused to resign from his post, though he did take a two-month break to go to rehab.
The former mayor was diagnosed with malignant liposarcoma-- a rare form of cancer--while campaigning for reelection in 2014, which eventually forced him to quit the race. Ford was later unanimously elected to a Toronto city council seat, which he held until he died.
"With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the Ford family announces the passing of their beloved son, brother, husband, and father, Councillor Rob Ford, earlier today at the age of 46," his family said in a statement Tuesday. "A dedicated man of the people, Councillor Ford spent his life serving the citizens of Toronto."
