Elizabeth Warren Is Not Running for President, or Maybe She Is

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) is getting a big question a lot lately, and her answers about whether she'll run for president in 2020 have ranged from awkward to non-committal to outright denial.

The Massachusetts Democrat made a strange face when pressed about the rumors on NBC's "Today Show" on Tuesday, while insisting that she's focused on running for reelection to the Senate in 2018.

However, in another interview with Susan Page of USA Today, Warren could not promise her Massachusetts constituents that she would serve out a full term if reelected.

"That's certainly my plan," Warren said.

Page called out the non-committal answer, but Warren repeated, "That is my plan."

Warren shrugged off both CNN and MSNBC reporters wondering about her jockeying for position in 2020. Asked by "CBS Sunday Morning" if, as the leader of the so-called "Resistance," she would be a natural fit to run against President Trump, Warren said, "This isn't about the election in four years. This is about what happens this week."

"Are you thinking about it?" reporter Chip Reid asked.

"No," Warren said.

In December, she told a Boston news team that running for president was not on her "radar."

Warren's national profile grew in February when, in the midst of a screed about then-Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) potentially being attorney general, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) invoked a little-known rule and temporarily stopped her from speaking on the Senate floor.

After McConnell noted "she persisted" after being warned about impugning a colleague, progressives rejoiced and a new hashtag was born–and even a new book by Chelsea Clinton.

Less than a month after Trump took office, the New York Times declared Warren a "very early frontrunner" for 2020.
