Speier Disputes Jeh Johnson's Testimony That DNC Was Notified of Hacking

Rep. Jackie Speier (D., Calif.) disputed former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson's testimony earlier on Wednesday over whether the Democratic National Committee was notified that it was hacked during the 2016 campaign.

CNN host Jake Tapper asked Speier if she was surprised by Johnson's statement that the DNC rejected assistance. Speier said she disputed Johnson's statement because she had spoken with then-DNC chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), who told her that she knew nothing of it and only a low-level staffer was contacted.

Tapper sought clarification of what Speier said.

"I just want to ask you, you say you want to dispute it, but Debbie Wassermann Schultz, who was then chair of the DNC, according to what you just said, said that DHS and the FBI did reach out to the DNC, they just didn't reach out to her personally," Tapper said. "That doesn't mean they didn't reach out to the DNC, though."

Speier said the DHS and FBI should have contacted Schultz.

"Well, they reached out to inform them, but in terms of the gravity of the issue, it was never really one that was elevated," Speier said, again stating that only a low-level staffer was contacted.

"Well, it sounds like incompetence at the DNC," Tapper said.
