Continetti: Al Franken Is the Loser of the Week, Mike Pompeo Is the Winner

Al Franken

Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti appeared on the "Special Report with Bret Baier" panel Friday, giving his "winners and losers" of the week.

He called C.I.A. chief Mike Pompeo the winner of the week for rumors he could take the job of secretary of state.

"My winner is Mike Pompeo who is being talked about to replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state. He is loved not only in the White House but also at the State Department," Continetti said.

Continetti said Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) is his the loser of the week for mishandling sexual misconduct claims against him, and he contrasted him with Rep. John Conyers (D., Mich.).

"My loser is Al Franken, who I think has been mishandling these accusations of sexual harassment, mounting calls for his resignation—and now he has a new enemy with John Conyers, who is facing similar misconduct on the House side," Continetti said.

Conyers is facing sexual misconduct charges but has received a different reaction from his Democratic colleagues.

There have been more calls from Democratic lawmakers for Conyers to step down than Franken, a fact that some members of the Black Congressional Caucus are calling a double-standard.

That belief is being echoed by Conyers' attorney, who said: "[House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi is going to have to explain what is the discernible difference between Al Franken and John Conyers."
