CNN Calls Out Clinton’s Press Sec for Mischaracterizing Comey’s Statement

July 13, 2016

Hillary Clinton’s press secretary Brian Fallon was called out Wednesday on CNN for saying the media mischaracterized FBI Director James Comey’s statement on what would happen to an FBI employee who handled classified material how Clinton did with her private email server.

Co-host Kate Bolduan mentioned that Fallon used to work in the Department of Justice and asked what his punishment would have been had he done what Clinton did.

Fallon said the media was mischaracterizing Comey’s comments that his staff would have been disciplined for handling emails the way Clinton did.

"Look, I actually think that the director’s comments on that point have been mischaracterized. He refused to engage in hypotheticals," Fallon said. "He was asked about potentially if somebody mishandled information, what might happen to them and he gave a range of potential disciplinary actions."

"But, of course, he believes that Hillary Clinton did not willfully mishandle any classified information," Fallon said. "So, I really do think that that answer has been mischaracterized in terms of what he actually said.

Co-host John Berman called Fallon out for his response.

"Brian, I think you’re actually mischaracterizing what the FBI Director said," Berman said. "He wasn’t engaging in hypotheticals."

"I'm not, John. Go back and watch, John," Fallon said.

"He was asked a direct question, at the FBI, what would happen if someone did something similar to this, and he said the range of punishments would be from letter of reprimand all the way to being fired," Berman said. "That’s directly what he said. He said if you worked for me, there would be some kind of sanction."
