Clinton Fundraises off Polls Showing Tight Race With Trump: 'He Can't Win, Can He?'

'If we start to get complacent, we're going to be looking at a Trump presidency'

A new Hillary Clinton campaign email is fundraising off polls showing her either tied or losing in battleground states against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Quinnipiac polls this week showed Clinton and Trump essentially tied in Pennsylvania and Florida and Trump holding a slight edge in Florida. Barack Obama won all three of those states during his successful campaigns in 2008 and 2012, and George W. Bush won Florida and Ohio in both 2000 and 2004.

The email from Deputy Communications Director Christina Reynolds frets "he could" win and the race is "ACTUALLY going to be tight."

"If we start to get complacent, we're going to be looking at a Trump presidency," she wrote.

The email reads:

Everyone I know keeps asking me the same question: "He can't win, can he?"

News flash. He could.

In fact, there are a bunch of new polls out this week that have us in a dead heat with Donald Trump in the critical general election states of Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Now, take public polls with a grain of salt, but it’s clear that this election is ACTUALLY going to be tight -- which means that if we start to get complacent, we're going to be looking at a Trump presidency.

We're getting ready to build an organization that can win in the critical battleground states -- but it takes serious resources to open hundreds of offices, hire field organizers, and train volunteers for what promises to be the election fight of a lifetime.

This team can get it done, but we have to start right now.

While Trump has essentially locked up the Republican nomination, Clinton remains in a contentious primary battle with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in the Democratic primary. While Clinton is close to clinching the requisite number of delegates, Sanders has vowed to fight all the way to the convention. He won the Indiana primary last week and the West Virginia primary on Tuesday.
