Cantor: ‘Important’ for Entitlements to Be Included in Any Fiscal Cliff Deal

House Republican leaders emphasized Wednesday that a deal can be brokered over the fiscal cliff, provided spending cuts and entitlement reform are part of the agreement.

“I was heartened to see last week that the president’s chief political adviser indicated that Medicare and Medicaid are the main drivers of our deficit,” Cantor said. “I know we have seen this morning also several editorial writers indicate the same: that it is important that we put these drivers of the deficit on the table and include them as part of any agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff.”

Speaker John Boehner said he is “optimistic” that a deal can be reached.
