Bill Maher Mocks Trump Supporter at CNN Town Hall: 'Do You Read the News?'

February 9, 2017

Comedian Bill Maher mocked a Donald Trump supporter during a CNN town hall set to air Thursday night, asking the man if he reads the news while castigating the president.

CNN aired a preview clip of its "Messy Truth" town hall hosted by Van Jones in which Maher argued with a Trump supporter over the president's performance so far in office.

The Trump supporter wanted to know why Maher and people in Hollywood were not cutting the president some "slack" since he has only been in the White House for three weeks.

"Give him a break," the man said.

"Give him a break?" Maher said loudly. "Do you read the news?"

The town hall attendee shot back that the presidency is "the toughest job on Earth."

Maher responded back in a sarcastic tone.

"The toughest job on Earth has never been done like this. First of all, this is beyond the realm of politics," the HBO talkshow host said.

"Let's pretend this is just politics; it's a giant con," Maher said. "He ran for the little man and then what does he do? He gets into office. The coal companies can dump sludge in the river because, you know, that's what the little man is aching for."

"Undoing Dodd-Frank [a law that regulates Wall Street banks] because so many of the town halls in Appalachia, people were standing up and saying 'Mister Trump, please get rid of the Volcker Rule!'" he added.

Maher appeared to be pushing the point that Trump is pushing policies to benefit corporations and the wealthy. He concluded his argument by bringing up the president's accusations of voter fraud to justify that the Trump presidency cannot be taken seriously.

"You know of course we are worried when the president sees multitudes that do not exist as in the illegal voting, three million. That should bother you, sir–I'm not the crazy one here."

"The Messy Truth" will air Thursday at 9 p.m. on CNN.
