2016: Obama's America continues to surprise Hollywood insiders as it surges at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter has the story on its latest success:
As Republicans gathered in Tampa, Fla., for the GOP convention, conservative documentary 2016: Obama's America rocketed to No. 2 at the domestic box office Monday.
Obama's America grossed an estimated $1.2 million for the day from 1,091 theaters, dropping a narrow 37 percent from Sunday. Most films dropped 60 percent or more.
The film, based on Dinesh D’Souza book, now has grossed $10.5 million to become the No. 6 political documentary of all time and the top conservative doc. It's also the top documentary of 2012, excluding nature films.
Weekend numbers were revised upward as well, as the documentary took in $6.5 million for 7th place. This put it a half-million dollars ahead of the new release Premium Rush, which analysts had projected would tie or slightly edge 2016 when everything was said and done.
