Nine of the 12 youngest lawmakers in the country are Republican, including five women, who are all under 24 years old.

The Huffington Post published earlier this week a list of the youngest state legislators they could find, revealing a diverse crop of young GOP lawmakers.

The youngest on the list, Saira Blair, is an 18-year-old who won a seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates last November. Blair is followed by Aundré Bumgardner, 20, who was the "only Republican on the ballot to win in his blue Connecticut district."

"A lot of people didn’t think I had the life experience to be a legislator, but it doesn’t require experience per se," Bumgardner said. "Mostly it requires listening unequivocally to others and the art of negotiation."

Drew Christensen, 21, defeated "opponents in their 60s for both the Republican Party nomination and the general election to win a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives," the Huffington Postsaid.

"The legislature is supposed to represent the people," said Kayla Kessinger, 22, a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates. "But how could they fully represent the people if there were nobody around my age?"

The list also includes AJ Edgecomb, a Maine state representative born in 1993,

Alex Looysen, a 23-year-old North Dakota state representative, Jennifer Sullivan, a member of the Florida House of Representatives, also 23, and Avery Bourne a 22-year-old member of the Illinois House of Representatives.

The oldest member on the list is Sarah Laszloffy, who at 23 is already the chair of the House Education Committee and majority whip for the Republicans in Montana.

The three Democrats on the list are all male.
