Will: Some Presidents Take Foreign Policy Cues from Kissinger, Obama Takes His from Monty Python

Columnist George Will quipped that the Obama administration's feckless foreign policy was straight from Monty Python, the British comedy sketch series, Tuesday during theĀ Special Report panel.

Discussing the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, Will criticized Secretary of State John Kerry's remarks that nothing the U.S. was saying should be "seen as a threat to Putin," causing Will to wonder what the country was doing if it wasn't threatening a "bad guy who's doing bad things." And he went on.

"Today, or maybe it was yesterday, one loses track, [Jay] Carney said we are actively evaluating," Will said. "That's distinct from passively evaluating. Now, the meals ready to eat that we sent, we were careful not to send in military planes because we thought that would be provocative. They were sent in commercial trucks. Some presidents take their foreign policy from the idealism of Woodrow Wilson, some from the realism of Henry Kissinger. This is foreign policy from Monty Python."

Will added he believed Putin's aim, in order to make his actions historic, was to do in the NATO alliance that helped take down the Soviet Union.

Full exchange:

GEORGE WILL: I think Putin's aim, to be really historic, is to do in the alliance that did in the Soviet Union and that is NATO, and he can do that by calling our bluff, because I think he would find that we are bluffing in applying Article Five --

BRET BAIER: Article Five is the treaty responding to any country that is in NATO, protecting it militarily.

WILL: This crisis began with Secretary of State Kerry saying nothing we are saying should be seen as a threat to Putin. Well, if you're not threatening a bad guy who's doing bad things, what are you doing? Today, or maybe it was yesterday, one loses track, Mr. Carney said we are actively evaluating. That's distinct from passively evaluating. Now, the meals ready to eat that we sent, we were careful not to send in military planes because we thought that would be provocative. They were sent in commercial trucks. Some presidents take their foreign policy from the idealism of Woodrow Wilson, some from the realism of Henry Kissinger. This is foreign policy from Monty Python.
