Weiner: I’m Glad Clinton Didn’t Give a Lot of Thought to Her Email Practices

July 26, 2016

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D., N.Y.) said he was glad Tuesday that Hillary Clinton did not put a lot of thought into where she stored her State Department emails during an interview at the Democratic National Convention.

Clinton remarked last year that she was not "thinking a lot" about her email practices when she became secretary of state. Her decision to use a private server has been a controversy throughout her presidential campaign.

In an interview with Fox Business reporter Charlie Gasparino in Philadelphia, Weiner dismissed Clinton’s high negative ratings and her private email scandal, despite FBI Director James Comey slamming her as being "extremely careless" with classified information.

"Do you think the email scandal is something she can get away from? Because James Comey used some pretty tough language," Gasparino said.

"I bet you if tomorrow I went to your editor’s desk and opened up all his emails, there’d be some embarrassing things in there, too," Weiner said. "We get that, and it’s a problem, and she said she made a mistake. But to be honest with you, I don’t believe that the American people, when they’re choosing a president, want to figure out who knew the most about a server in wherever the building it was."

Gasparino noted the controversy was more about Clinton violating the rules.

"As it turned out, Comey said it wasn’t an intentional thing in order to hide anything," Weiner said. "It was a function of what she said, that she didn’t give it a great deal of thought, and to be honest with you ... I’m glad she’s not giving it a great deal of thought of where her emails are."

Weiner resigned from Congress after a sexting scandal in 2011 and had his 2013 New York mayoral bid derailed by the same behavior. His wife is close Clinton aide Huma Abedin.
