Watch US Soldiers Raid IS Prison

October 26, 2015

New video shows some of the raid against Islamic State (IS) forces in Iraq on Thursday.

The raid, which took place near the town of Hawija in northern Iraq, was a joint operation between the United States Army's elite Delta Force and Kurdish commandos, NBC News reports. The combined force raided a makeshift IS prison in order to free a large number of hostages. It was prompted by reports that the hostages were about to be killed.

The video shows a number of soldiers clearing the prison room by room while gunfire can be heard in the background. It appears to show a fire raging outside of the building. Hostages flee from the gunfire with their hands up at one point in the video. In another room, an IS flag is hung on the wall.

As hostages are searched by the soldier whose helmet cam is recording the raid, soldiers speaking English can be heard in the background. However, none of the soldiers in the video are identified. All of the soldiers in the video appear to be outfitted with American made equipment.

Delta Force commando Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler was shot and killed during the fight over the prison. The firefight that lead to his death does not appear to be present in the video. Defense Secretary Ash Carter praised Sgt. Wheeler's bravery under fire saying he "did what proud Americans do."

"I am immensely proud of this young man," Carter said. Wheeler is the first American soldier to be killed in the fight against IS.
